Children are a curious bunch to have around your home and as such, it can be expected that they can get into almost anything and everything. With their natural curiosity, it’s possible that they have also discovered the vents to your home. Unfortunately, there are risks to them messing around with the registers. Thankfully, however, it’s possible to childproof these components.
Here, HVAC company AAA Air Conditioning, Inc. lists the four methods you can use to childproof your HVAC registers.
- Secure the Registers – Your children may be able to lift the registers of your home if you don’t keep a close eye on them. Unfortunately, you can watch them 24/7 so what can you do? Simple: secure the registers to the floor with nails and screws. If your registers are made of wood, you can simply drill or hammer them in place. If it’s metal, meanwhile, consider buying screw-in vents.
- Screen the Registers – Alternatively, if you aren’t hot on the idea of screwing your registers in place, you can screen them instead. By installing vinyl screening on the registers, you can prevent your children’s toys and other objects from falling into the vents without preventing air from passing into your home.
- Secure the Outdoor Unit as Well – While your child may not be able to venture outside yet, they eventually will. As such, if you have an outdoor unit, prepare for the future by blocking it off with fences or shrubbery. Leave some space for your HVAC contractor to conduct maintenance, however, or they may refuse to service the unit.
- Use Plastic Registers – On the other hand, if you’re concerned about the sharp, metal vent cutting your child’s fingers, replace them with a plastic register instead to prevent them from hurting themselves through the vent.
